Shrewsbury & Newport Canals

Shrewsbury & Newport Canals

The Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust has the ultimate goal of restoring the 25 mile link from the Shropshire Union Canal to Shrewsbury.

Work towards this has been carried out in association with WRG, in Shrewsbury, at each end of Berwick Tunnel, where the channel and towpath have been cleared, and at Berwick Wharf. The trust also holds regular work parties at Newport, Wappenshall and Shrewsbury, to which further volunteers are warmly invited.

In conjunction with the Junction Inn and Norbury Wharf Ltd, SNC holds an annual boat rally and festival at Norbury Junction on the first May bank holiday weekend. A major focus, however, remains the restoration of the warehouses at Wappenshall Wharf to, among other things, celebrate the life and work of Thomas Telford.

During 2019 the trust commenced a phased restoration approach and work now progresses on the smaller, original warehouse which is planned to open to the public during 2020 and will include a quality coffee shop/bistro. The adjoining basin has also been excavated; further work will see a towpath wall built and the basin lined to ensure that it retains water, so that the warehouses are once again set in their original heritage context, complete with a pair of Woolwich narrowboats.
