Stafford Riverway Link (Community Interest Company) aims to promote the restoration of the historic Sow navigation, linking the Staffs & Worcs Canal at Baswich with the town centre of Stafford to connect the waterway to the national network.

Work has been underway since 2015 and by the end of a very productive 2019, most of the old basin had been dug out and a large proportion of the basin walls and towpath rebuilt. The footprint of the original lock house had also been restored.

The project has benefitted from heightened local publicity during the year, including local TV news coverage of its open weekend that was held in September. This has resulted in positive fundraising efforts, including a community grant from Stafford Borough Council and support from local businesses. This has also increased the number of volunteer hours working on the site at the monthly work parties.

Planning work is now underway to build the bridge that will enable the waterway link between the canal and basin to be reopened. This will be the main focus of the current year and into 2021, along with the completion of the basin that will eventually provide moorings for up to 12 boats.
