The Melton & Oakham Waterways Society wants to reopen the Melton Mowbray Navigation, opening up the Wreake Valley corridor, and preserve and enhance the route and remains of the Oakham Canal.

Following the opening up of the waterway ring in Melton and the building of a slipway, the society aims to stage an IWA Trailboat Rally.

The junction with the Leicester Navigation now boasts a bridge with navigable headroom, and the area has been officially named as one of the planning ’hubs’ in the Soar/Grand Union Partnership plan.

Future plans include the repair and reopening of Eye Kettleby Lock and Bridge, and funding is being sought to transfer the two work-boats into a purpose-built boathouse in Melton.
