Ashton Canal - Hollinwood Branch

Ashton Canal - Hollinwood Branch

The Hollinwood Canal Society aims to preserve the remaining sections of the waterway, work towards the restoration of other sections, and eventually reconnect with the canal network. It ensured that the construction of the Metrolink tram route through Droylsden did not create an obstruction to the canal line. HCS has established further links with local councils, which own the canal route in Daisy Nook Country Park and through Littlemoss. With the help of WRG it has started clearing trees from the canal bed of the Fairbottom Branch, with the aim of rewatering this for use by a trip-boat. The society continues to research the history of the canal and build up a photographic archive, as well as organising working parties to clear vegetation and repair stonework. In addition to guided walks, an online audio-visual canal trail has been introduced as part of a project to increase awareness of the canal through different means of interpretation.
