Boston to Peterborough Wetland Corridor
Recent site visits have revealed that the ancient Car Dyke on the north-eastern edge of Peterborough was used as a navigation, most likely during the 1800s. Rope-wear marks on some of the original bridges show that horse-drawn barges were hauled into Peterborough from the River Welland via the Folly River. This part of the Car Dyke Ancient Monument forms a significant part of the preferred route for the restored waterway. Historic England is aware of the plans to restore navigation via this historic asset and is open to discussions as to how this can be achieved while conserving the precious archaeological status.
Open channel transfer of water to feed the two new reservoirs that are planned by Anglian Water remain as key features for both South Lincolnshire and the Fenland reservoirs. The proposed South Lincs reservoir has the potential for benefitting enormously B2P WC, and the Fens reservoir would achieve the original aims of the Fens Waterway Link project. The main consideration is whether the water is transferred to the reservoirs by closed pipe or open channel transfer. The preferred option is open channel transfer.
