The Dorset & Somerset Canal Society aims to conserve the waterway’s existing structures and maintain them as examples of canal engineering in an area without navigable waterways.

To this end, it has ensured conservation of Murtry Aqueduct and excavation of Fussell’s Balance Lock or Boat Lift.

The society’s long-term aim is to build the canal from the Kennet & Avon Canal near Bradford-on-Avon to Poole, Dorset. Discussions are in progress with landowners with a view to building the first stage to Frome, Somerset.
