North Walsham & Dilham Canal
Like many organisations, the North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust has suffered due to the pandemic. Canal bank maintenance and a general tidy-up of most areas have been the main work undertaken by trust volunteers. Ebridge top lock gates were replaced in late 2019 and the trust’s next major project will be to replace the Ebridge bottom lock gates and, of course, to seek large grants to finance this project. NW&DCT has submitted a mitigation strategy to EA whereby on behalf of the proprietor, the Old Canal Company, the trust will maintain the soft landscaping and complete environmental works to mitigate the effect of the canal restoration. Approval of the strategy from EA, and a lifting of working controls with a general recovery in public health, will allow the proprietor to get on with rewatering the next pound upstream to Swafield Bridge, using the trust’s volunteers where practicable.
