North Walsham & Dilham Canal
For the time being restoration has slowed on the canal in the face of the pandemic. Physical achievements have been restricted to the rebuilding of brickwork at the entrance to a culvert and the completion of the close-fitting of lock gates at Bacton Wood Lock.
The North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust has submitted a mitigation strategy to EA whereby on behalf of the proprietor, the Old Canal Company, the trust will maintain the soft landscaping and complete environmental works to mitigate the effect of the canal restoration. Approval of the strategy from EA, and a lifting of working controls with a general recovery in public health, will allow the proprietor to get on with rewatering the next pound upstream to Swafield Bridge using the trust’s volunteers where practicable.
During the pandemic the canal had some unexpected users: wild swimmers – some without wetsuits.
